Foreword:

Thelifeofachickisnotaneasyone.Theyhatchfromtheireggsvulnerableandhelpless,withtheoddsstackedagainstthem.Manydonotsurvivetheirfirstfewdaysoflife,butforthosethatdo,thereisaworldofpossibilitieswaitingforthem.Thisisthestoryofagroupofchickswhorefusedtolettheircircumstancesdefinethem,andinsteadrosetogreatnessthroughhardworkanddetermination.Inasmallcoopontheoutskirtsoftown,agroupofnewlyhatchedchickspeepedandchirpedastheytriedtonavigatetheirnewworld.Theywerefragilecreatures,withtinywingsandsoftdownyfeathers.Butevenatthisyoungage,theyshowedsignsofdeterminationandgrit.Theypeckedatthegroundforfood,instinctivelyknowingthattheyneededsustenancetosurvive.Asthedayspassed,thechicksgrewstrongerandmoreconfident.Theystartedtoexploretheirsurroundings,peckingatanythingthatcaughttheireye.Theyplayedgameswitheachother,chasingafterinsectsandbitsofgrass.Andthroughitall,theycontinuedtogrowandthrive.

Butasmuchastheyenjoyedtheircarefreeexistence,thechicksknewthattherewasmoretolifethanjustplayingallday.Theywantedtobemorethanjustordinarychickens.Theywantedtobegreat.Andso,theystartedtotrain.Theyranlapsaroundthecoop,buildinguptheirlegmusclesandendurance.Theypracticedflappingtheirwings,hopingtoonedaytakeflight.Andwhentheyweren'ttraining,theywerestudying.Theylistenedintentlyastheolderchickenstoldstoriesabouttheworldoutsidethecoop,aboutthedangersthatlurkedaroundeverycorner.Thedaysturnedintoweeks,andtheweeksturnedintomonths.Thechicksgrewbiggerandstronger,andtheirdeterminationneverwavered.Theyknewthattheyhadalongroadaheadofthem,buttheywereupforthechallenge.Oneday,astrangemancametothecoop.Helookedatthechickswithacriticaleye,examiningtheirfeathersandthewaytheywalked.Thechickswerenervous,buttheystoodtallandproud,hopingtoimpresshim.

Themansmiled,noddinghisheadinapproval."Thesearesomefinebirds,"hesaid."I'lltakethem."Thechickswereconfused.Whatdidhemean,hewouldtakethem?Wherewashetakingthem?Themanscoopedthemup,onebyone,andputtheminalargecrate.Thechickshuddledtogether,scaredanduncertain.Theytraveledforwhatfeltlikedays,jostledaroundinthecrateasitwasloadedontotrucksandplanes.Theyhadnoideawheretheyweregoingorwhatwasgoingtohappentothem.

Finally,theyarrivedattheirdestination–alargefarminthemiddleofnowhere.Themantookthemoutofthecrateandplacedtheminapenwithdozensofotherchickens.Atfirst,thechickswereintimidatedbytheirnewsurroundings.Theotherchickenswerebiggerandstrongerthantheywere,andtheyseemedtohaveahierarchythatthechicksdidn'tunderstand.Butthechicksdidn'tletthatstopthem.Theycontinuedtotrainandstudy,determinedtomakesomethingofthemselves.Andeventually,theirhardworkpaidoff.Theystartedtolayeggsthatwerebiggerandbetterthananyoftheotherchickens'.Theirfeathersgrewshinyandbright,andtheybecamethetalkofthefarm.

Butthechicksweren'tcontenttojustbethebestatlayingeggs.Theywantedmore.Theywantedtofly.Andso,theycontinuedtotrain.Theypracticedflappingtheirwingswithmoreintensitythaneverbefore,determinedtotakeflight.Oneday,aftermonthsoftraining,oneofthechicksfinallyliftedofftheground.Shesoaredthroughtheair,herwingsbeatingagainstthewindasshecircledaroundthepen.Theotherchickswatchedinawe,inspiredbytheirfriend'ssuccess.Andsoonenough,theytooweretakingflight,soaringthroughtheskywithgraceandease.

Theotherchickensonthefarmlookedoninamazement.Theyhadneverseenanythinglikethesechicksbefore.Theywerestronger,faster,andmoredeterminedthananychickentheyhadeverknown.Andsoonenough,thechickswerefamous.Peoplecamefromallovertoseethemfly,toheartheirstoriesofdeterminationandperseverance.Yearswentby,andthechicksgrewoldandgray.Butevenintheiroldage,theycontinuedtoinspireotherswiththeirstoryofrisingfromhumblebeginningstogreatness.Andso,thelegacyofthechickslivedon.Theywereproofthatnomatterhowsmallorvulnerableyoumayseem,withhardworkanddetermination,anythingispossible.
